Jean Paul Gaultier is a French designer best known for his eponymous design house and his seven-year tenure as head designer at Hermès. Born in 1952 in the Paris suburb of Arcueil, Gaultier was interested in fashion from a young age but was never formally trained in design. He showed his debut fashion collection in 1976 with his partner Francis Menuge, but did not establish his own design house until 1982.
Jean Paul Gaultier has spent the majority of his life creating the most cutting-edge designs, including clothing, stage costumes and perfume. Gaultier's designs are daring, confident and modern and have continued to raise the bar for fashion, season after season.
Gaultier became internationally recognized when he designed the costumes for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour in 1990. The conical bras and basques he created for her now rank among some of the most iconic designs in history. Over the years Gaultier has designed for many celebrities and has worked in collaboration with other iconic designers and brands, from Philippe Starck to Coca Cola.
Today, Gaultier brings his creative genius and love for avant-garde to couture swimwear. He launched his first swimwear collection in collaboration with La Perla in July 2011. Gaultier's swimwear is unmistakably stunning with bold palettes, striking patterns and can be completed with one of his fabulous cover-ups.
